Components of a Digital Signature

Although most people may want to have a digital signature for their transactions, they are not aware of what the signature comprises. Most people would hardly tell the difference between this type of signature, and the electronic signature. While electronic signatures are copies of a written signature that have been scanned, a digital signature is whereby one signs a document which is then digitally scanned, and it acts as the one to verify or authenticate the identity of the person. This form of signature safeguards the confidentiality of the person, and ensures that certain transactions cannot take place unless the person claiming to be the bona fide one proves that they are indeed the ones. And proving means using an authentic signature that has been digitalized.

First and foremost, a digital signature must contain the name of the company or individual that is being signed. This is important and is the first step in getting the signature digitalized since it prevents any one who may come later with the same names from being signed. A Digital signature will also comprise of the public key. This is like your secret identification number, and is part of the verification process. The expiry date of that public key is also included in the signature. This is used to spell out the duration for which the digital signature is valid, or may be used to reset the signature if the need arises. The other components include a serial number for the digital identification, and a digital signature of the certification authority, which is the one that gives the digital certificate.
